Newcastle Labour is set to invest £1.5 million in play spaces to create safe, modern and inclusive places where children of all abilities, including children with disabilities, can play side by side. This investment is due to be formally approved at a meeting of Cabinet on the 15th September.

The funding, shaped by a review commissioned by Councillor Alex Hay, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, will deliver fully accessible flagship play areas at Blakelaw Park, Riverside Country Park, Elswick Park and City Stadium. Each will receive around £250,000 to provide modern, inclusive equipment designed so no child is left out.

Seven further neighbourhood sites will receive £90,000 each for refurbishment, ensuring that every corner of the city sees the benefit of this programme.

The enhanced sites will feature sensory, audio and visual play equipment, natural play elements and improved accessibility. Local communities will be fully involved in the design process to ensure spaces reflect their needs and foster pride in their neighbourhoods.

Councillor Alex Hay said:

“Play is vital for children’s health, happiness and development. It helps them make friends, build confidence and feel part of their community. Every child in Newcastle, including children with disabilities, deserves a safe and exciting place to play close to home.

This £1.5 million programme is about creating play spaces that are inclusive, where children of all abilities can play together, and where families can enjoy time side by side. It is about bringing communities closer and showing that Newcastle is a city investing in its future. It builds on the £1.75 million we have already delivered and represents a real step forward for children and families across our city.”

This is a £1.5 million investment in Newcastle’s future, making sure every child can play, every family can enjoy time together, and every community can be proud.
