The funding needed to complete the Tyne Bridge restoration has now been confirmed by the Government!
For nearly 100 years, the Tyne Bridge has connected our communities and stood as a proud symbol of the North East. With its centenary approaching, getting it restored has been one of our top priorities.
Cllr Karen Kilgour, Leader of Newcastle City Council, said:
“The Tyne Bridge is not just an icon, it’s a vital link for our communities and a source of huge civic pride. I’m proud we’ve helped secure the funding to restore it for future generations.”
Cllr Alex Hay, Deputy Leader, added: “We’ve campaigned for this for years, committed council funding to get the works started, and made our case directly to Government. I’m delighted we can now get on with the job and complete the restoration to the highest standard.”
Thanks to determined local campaigning, support from our local MPs and Mayor Kim McGuinness, and action from the Labour Government, we’re now on track to deliver a fully restored bridge in time for its 100th birthday.
Here’s what this funding means:
- Council-funded work already under way can continue without delay
- Full funding confirmed by the Government
- Restoration completed in time for the bridge’s centenary
This is another great decision for Newcastle and the North East by the Labour Government.
