Today, the Labour Government has announced the biggest ever investment in North East transport, with £1.8 billion heading to our region to deliver cleaner, greener, better-connected travel.
For years, Labour councillors here in Newcastle have been fighting for better transport infrastructure in our city. By working with our Labour MPs, Mayor Kim McGuinness and now a Labour Government that listens, we’ve helped secure the investment needed to deliver real and lasting improvements in Newcastle.
Here in Newcastle, it means real progress:
- More reliable, low-emission buses and an integrated network with one ticket for bus, Metro and rail
- Major investment in public transport infrastructure, routes and improved reliability
- Road maintenance upgrades to improve journeys for drivers across our city
- Hundreds of new EV charging points and improvements to walking, cycling and pedestrian routes
- Upgraded bus stops and transport interchanges serving local neighbourhoods
Cllr Karen Kilgour, Leader of Newcastle Labour Group, said:
“This is a once-in-a-generation investment that will transform how people move around our city. Labour in government is backing our ambitions for a modern, clean and affordable public transport system that works for everyone in Newcastle. It’s a real example of what can be achieved when local, regional and national Labour leadership work together.”
Cllr Alex Hay, Deputy Leader of the Labour Group, said:
“This funding reflects the hard work of Labour councillors in Newcastle, working closely with our local MPs and Mayor Kim McGuinness to push for real change. We’ve already delivered significant progress, and now we can go further and faster with the support of a Labour Government. This is Labour delivering for Newcastle and the North East.”
This is Labour delivering for Newcastle. This is Labour delivering for the North East.
