The last remaining underpass in Kenton has been transformed into a bright public route that celebrates the history of Cowgate through art. ‘Spearfish’, an arts body, has brightened up the subway, known locally as Windmill subway, as part of the Re-Newcastle £4.3m improvement to Cowgate junction.

Cllr Ged Bell says: “As well as improving the junction, we wanted to improve the local environment and the best way to do this was by working with local artists and people in Cowgate. We’re delighted with the outcome, which is eye catching and has a strong neighbourhood identity.”
