The Tory Housing and Planning Bill currently going through parliament is blatant attack on social hosing and will fail to address the housing crisis in this country. It is unfair and discriminates against council tenants and future generations, who will not be able to afford to buy a home.

The proposal for ‘starter homes’, for first time buyers aged under 40, will still cost up to £250,000.  This is even following a discount, and will mean many young people in Newcastle will still not be able to afford a home. The housing charity ‘Shelter’ has said that people will need to earn £50,000 a year to afford one.

 Most damaging is that there will be fewer homes for low income residents. The Council will be required to sell some of its council houses as soon as they become vacant, to pay a government-imposed levy. This revenue will subsidise the starter homes and the right-to-buy for housing association tenants. Council tenants will also have time-limited tenancies and have to say goodbye to housing security. Many will wonder where they and their grown up children will live.
