Newcastle City Council’s proposal to axe up to 11 Neighbourhood Wardens could see a rise in anti social behaviour a Labour Councillor warned this week.
The Council proposes to reduce the Street Warden Service from 42 to 31 to save £225,000 and this week Stephen Lambert, member for Kenton is concerned that the cuts could lead to more anti social behaviour and low level crime in some neighbourhoods. Councillor Lambert has submitted a written question to Community Safety Boss Councillor Anita Lower (at 2nd March meeting of full Council) over what impact a cut in the service will have for citywide community safety.
Councillor Lambert said: “The city’s wardens are the ‘eyes and ears’ of locals neighbourhoods providing reassurance to those who fear crime as well as having powers to issue ‘on the spot’ fines for minor environmental offences”.
“A third of residents living in the city’s most deprived neighbourhoods are concerned with anti social behaviour and a cut of a quarter to the street warden service could have very serious implications for community safety across the city. We could see more bad behaviour and low level criminality” he said.
