Newcastle Council’s decision to scrap a high quality jobs and training programme for 400 unemployed city youngsters could lead to a ‘lost generation’, a City Labour Councillor warned this week. The Future Jobs Fund is currently being administered by Newcastle Council and has to date created temporary jobs for 179 young people aged between 18 to 24. In June, the Council announced it was scrapping the scheme as part of a Government led spending cuts programme. The scheme is due to finish on 30th March 2011 with no indication that it is to be replaced. Councillor Stephen Lambert said: “The...

The warning comes from Stephen Lambert, Labour’s spokesman on Community Safety on the City Council, who this week has tabled a written question to Councillor Anita Lower, the Council’s Executive Spokesperson for Public Protection about the matter. According to information obtained from City Councillor Stephen Lambert the Government’s Family Intervention Programme is proving successful in giving ‘intensive, hard-edged support’ to 29 families across the City with a marked reduction in anti-social behaviour. Overall crime, measured by official figures, is down by 6% in Newcastle from 2008/9 to 2009/10. Figures for house burglaries are down by 13% and thefts from cars have shown a steep fall of 29%. Councillor Stephen Lambert, Labour’s Community Safety Spokesman on the Council, this week welcomed the fall in crime across the city and attributed it to the increase in police on the beat.
