On Wednesday (1st September) at a meeting of Newcastle City Council, a minute’s silence was held in memory of the members of the British Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan and in solidarity with the Afghan people.
Whilst other Councillors were showing their respect for fallen servicemen and women, during the minute of silence and solidarity disrespectful Liberal Democrat Councillor Greg Stone was caught on his phone.
During last night’s meeting Councillors expressed their sorrow and solidarity for the people of Afghanistan particularly women and girls whose rights have already been attacked by the new Taliban regime, LGBT+ people, those who worked with British and collation forces and in Afghan civic institutions; who now all face an uncertain and dangerous future.
Lib Dem Councillor Greg Stone is better known by many residents for his sexist comments which led to a suspension last year (https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/greg-stone-suspended-sexist-tweet-18497032), bragging about using dubious lobbying techniques (https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/greg-stone-boasted-opening-doors-1748842) and other awful comments (https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/wannabe-mp-greg-stone-pressured-1409247).
Again Lib Dem Councillor Greg Stone has shown disrespect, not only this time for the residents of Newcastle and his fellow Councillors but now for our country’s heroic armed forces and the people of Afghanistan.
This raises the question again is scandal-ridden Lib Dem Greg Stone fit to be a Newcastle City Councillor? Local Lib Dems seem to think so.
