Lib Dems delay crime plan

Newcastle Labour Leader Nick Forbes has condemned ruling Lib Dems in Newcastle for failing to produce a crime and community safety strategy for the city on time.

The Government requires every Local Authority to work with the Police and other agencies to produce a plan to tackle crime and disorder and improve community safety.  The Safe Newcastle Plan was launched in 2005 and a new version is due this year. Most Councils have already produced their revised strategy, including all our neighbouring Tyne and Wear Authorities.  The new version of the Safe Newcastle plan was due before the Council's Executive Committee at its September meeting but this has been delayed again.

Nick said: “The council’s own resident’s survey has showed people in Newcastle under the Lib Dem council feel less safe after dark. Yet we are the only Council in Tyne and Wear that hasn’t got a new community safety plan yet. This shows that the Lib Dems don’t take the issue seriously, and can’t be trusted with you and your families’ safety.”

“We need Labour action to get more CCTV and more investment to crack down on crime so that people can feel safe in their own streets. If I was leading the Council I’d be banging heads together, not coming up with excuses why things haven’t happened.”
