Ruling Lib Dems at Newcastle City Council are in disarray over their plans to close the small pool at the City Baths on Northumberland Street.
The closure was justified by Lib Dem Culture Boss Cllr Pauline Allen, who said: “there is capacity at other pools in the city to accommodate some of the use. It should be noted that people over 60 have free bus travel in the city so other pools are a feasible option for them.”
However, another senior Lib Dem presented a petition on behalf of swimmers at the small pool, urging the Council not to go ahead with its closure.
Nick Forbes said: “The Lib Dems are in disarray over whether or not to close the small pool. The decision has clearly been made by a small elite within the Lib Dem group, with no involvement of their other councillors or the community. Telling pool users to get on the bus and go elsewhere is the height of arrogance.”
