A Newcastle City Council Residents Survey to be released to the public next week reveals that less than 5 in 10 people are happy with the condition of the city’s pavements and roads.
The figures were obtained by Councillor Stephen Lambert, Labour’s City spokesman on Neighbourhoods. According to the survey results 41% of city residents were very satisfied/satisfied with the condition of pavements and 47% were satisfied with the roads.
Councillor Lambert said “The figures make grim reading. Less than half of the city’s residents are happy with the condition of pavements and roads. Clearly we need more solid investment here. Some of our pavements are a disgrace and the roads pockmarked”.
According to figures obtained by the Kenton Councillors there has been a £250,000 cut in the LTP Budget for 2009/10 which covers major repairs to classified roads and routes used by buses. Although the Council is to spend £5.2 on road repairs and pavement improvements this year, the figure is nowhere near enough to bring the city’s pavements and roads up to “an acceptable standard” according to Councillor Lambert.
