Councillor calls for more action to deal with city's dangerous dogs

A Newcastle Labour Councillor this week has called on City Lib Dem bosses to take more action to deal with the problem of ‘dangerous dogs’ following a series of Evening Chronicle reports.
Welcoming new Government legislation which gives guidance to both councils and police to deal with the issue, Labour Councillor Stephen Lambert wants the Council to develop a strategy including increasing the number of dog wardens across the city.
Councillor Lambert said: “Over the last year the council received 30 complaints about dangerous dogs and the most recent case where a police officer was attacked north of Cowgate Estate.  Yet the council only employs one full time dog warden for the whole city.  This can’t be right.  Although most dogs and their owners are responsible, there is a still the burning concern of the minority of dangerous fighting dogs”.
Councillor Lambert wants the council to develop a team of dog wardens who have the resources and power to target those neighbourhoods where there is a clear community demand.  Wardens have legal powers to seize any dog found straying in public areas.

Promoted by Ray Collins, General Secretary, the Labour Party, on behalf of the Labour Party, both at 39 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0HA.
