A Newcastle Labour Councillor is calling on Council bosses and the police to take tough action on those young people who breach ASBOs. According to figures obtained by Councillor Stephen Lambert, who is Labour’s Community Safety Spokesman on the Council, there are currently 21 ASBOs in place that have been pursued by Newcastle City Council and the Police (Safe Newcastle Partners). Since January 2009 a staggering 13 have been breached. Now the Labour Councillor who represent Kenton on the Council wants ‘tough, no nonsense’ action taken against those who breach the Orders including prison sentences. Councillor Lambert said “The ASBO is an important tool to tackle stubborn anti social behaviour and gives local neighbourhoods respite from those who cause harm and distress. It’s shocking to discover that over 60% of ASBOs issued across the city have been broken. We need to get tough with these people and if need be, serve prison sentences. Doing nothing is not an option and gives out the wrong signals”. Councillor Lambert wants greater use of posters and leaflets to inform residents and enable them to report ASBO breaches.
