Crime has fallen sharply across the City according to figures obtained by City Councillor Stephen Lambert. Overall crime, measured by official figures, is down by 6% in Newcastle from 2008/9 to 2009/10. Figures for house burglaries are down by 13% and thefts from cars have shown a steep fall of 29%. Councillor Stephen Lambert, Labour’s Community Safety Spokesman on the Council, this week welcomed the fall in crime across the city and attributed it to the increase in police on the beat. He said: “Crime has fallen in the City. Crime levels are now 30% lower than they were five years ago and these falls have taken place during a recession. Arguably one key reason for this reduction is the increased number of police on the beat and social programme to tackle youth unemployment”. According to the data obtained by the Kenton Councillor the total number of police officers and community support officers in the city has gone up from 714 in 2008/9 to 814 in 2009/10.
